What is the difference between furniture board and plywood

If plywood finds its application as long pieces, it tends to bend and sag. Plyboard is stiffer than plywood and therefore it is less inclined to bending and sagging. Hence when there is a need for a longer piece of wood, plyboard is preferred over Plywood.

Warping and Cracking. Due to its dimensional stability, plyboard is highly resistant to warping and cracking. Compared to plyboard, plywood shows less resistance towards warping and cracking. Compared to plyboard, plywood is difficult to cut as it chips gravely.

Plyboard tends to hold minor gaps which are invisible from outside. Hardboard Hardboard is also known as high-density fiberboard HDF. Yes, it is actually a type of fiberboard, and it is in the same family as medium-density fiberboard MDF. Hardboard is an engineered wood product that is made out of exploded wood fibers that have been very highly compressed.

Due to the extreme compression, hardboard is incredibly dense, hard, and strong. The production process actually does not need the addition of a bonding agent, but resin is often added as an enhancement. Hardboard can be produced in either a wet process or a dry process.

The wet process leaves only one smooth side, whereas the dry process makes both sides smooth. The main advantage of using hardboard is the superior strength and durability. It is very dense and strong, which means that it can hold heavier objects without breaking.

In addition, it will never split or crack or create splinters. The structural integrity makes it very workable and easy to cut, and the smooth surface makes it easy to paint.

However, the extreme density makes it very heavy. This is not really the best choice if you are looking for a lightweight material. Furniture board — also known as particleboard — is the most common substrate of cabinet boxes, drawer boxes and shelves. The pressboard contains wood particles and resin adhered together with wood scraps, or waste, derived from plywood manufacturing.

Because furniture board has no natural grain pattern, it can be finished with a wood veneer or laminate layer to improve its aesthetic appeal. The quality of furniture board depends on several factors: the size of the particles, the amount of the glue, and the density of the board.

Smaller particles will make the board denser, heavier and more stable. One of the best types of particleboard is medium-density fiberboard MDF. MDF is a high-quality product that compares well with plywood but is considerably heavier which can make installation more challenging.

Plywood is crafted with the compression and adhesion of thin layers of wood, rather than particles, which creates a solid sheet. To enhance stability, the grain of the material is alternated with each new layer, forming a sturdy and strong panel.
