Aluminium can in fire
Hi I was wondering if you Knew the name of the stuff your Aunt burnt in her wood stove, Im having terrible trouble with creosate build up in my flew. Thanks I looked it up and I cant get that stuff shipped to Australia. Im sure If I tried hard enough I would find a way. On the weekend I lit my flew, it frightened me the whole flew glowed red. I shut the fire and flew down but some big chunks of creosate fell and smoldered for ages.
My chimney is so high and cools so much at the top Im having huge problems. I live quite rural and Its hard to get a sweep here, that will climb up there. I wish I knew all this was going to happen I would have designed the house differently at least the roof line for better access anyway. I doubt it could be a real substitute for proper chimney cleaning. Thats a great idea why didnt I see it. When you make a material into a powder or dust , you dramatically increase the available surface area in comparison to the volume of material.
This has the effect of dramatically reducing the ignition point of the material and in the case of aluminum it means that aluminum dust can explode in the presence of a naked flame or an electrical spark. There is quite a bit of evidence that says aluminum dust can spontaneously combust, though it would need to reach a fairly substantial concentration in the air to do so.
It is also worth noting that if the air contains any moisture, aluminum dust can react with the water, using the oxygen in the water to oxidize and freeing up hydrogen gas. This is a major safety concern as hydrogen is highly flammable and can also spontaneously combust and will catch light very easily, indeed, in the presence of a naked flame or electrical spark.
Grinding aluminum is a relatively straightforward process and it would not be any more dangerous than grinding any other metal except for the propensity for grinding to create aluminum dust. However, it is possible to increase your exposure to aluminum to dangerous levels where aluminum poisoning is a potential outcome.
If you suspect that you have aluminum poisoning, you should talk to a health professional immediately. The good news is that treating aluminum poisoning is fairly straight forward, the bad news is that any damage done by this poisoning is likely to be permanent.
If you want to burn aluminum foil , you need to get it hotter than degrees Celsius or degrees Fahrenheit. Is it bad to burn aluminum foil? If you can make it hot enough, you will get aluminum oxide which is another relatively harmless compound. Is Aluminum Foil Flammable? But should we be using aluminum foil like this? Are we keeping our sandwiches fresh at the expense of adding a fire hazard into our lives? Is it likely that our aluminum foil is going to burst into flame at the worst possible time?
Aluminum foil is not flammable and can only catch fire at very high temperatures. Your 1 priority is keeping your family safe. As a firefighter, I recommend everyone have a home safety kit that can ensure everyone you love gets out quickly and unharmed, in the event of a fire or other emergency.
Here is the Safety Kit that I recommend. Also read: What Makes Something Flammable? Any such product that is less than 0. The stuff we use in our kitchens tends to be around 0.
The good news is that this makes the foils thin and easy to wrap around the food that we want to protect with it. One nice thing about aluminum products is how easy they are to recycle. Started by paul. Started by eric Board Chemistry. Science News Features. Interviews Answers to Science Questions.
